According to historical records, the earliest rock drilling technique was during the Warring States Period, and Li Bing built Dujiangyan with the method of “fire and water stimulation”. Before 1900, the ancients used this method to excavate the world's first artificial mountain tunnel with a length of 16 meters and a height of about 4 meters. The method of burning water is to use the principle of thermal expansion and contraction of the rock. After the fire, it is quickly poured with water, so that the rock will be cracked and even become like tofu.


With the development of metallurgical processes, people use a chisel or steel to smash the rock bit by bit, so that a hole is made in the rock, and the "hand hammering" has once become the mainstream. After the industrial revolution, mankind mastered the power, and the demand for drilling holes was greatly increased, and various rock drilling tools came into being.


In 1813, the first steam-powered impact rock drill came out. However, due to the high steam temperature, the use was not convenient, and the pipeline was long and there was a problem of cooling. It was quickly replaced by a compressed air-powered rock drill and succeeded. Applied in the Seine Valley Tunnel in the Alps. The wind-driven rock drill officially entered the historical stage and became the core force of rock drilling construction.


Although the pneumatic rock drill has many advantages, as the hole depth increases, it is found that a large impact energy is lost at the joint of the drill rod, and the working environment of the worker is bad. With the development of hydraulic technology, hydraulic rock drills began to be used in drilling operations, and rock drills with higher mechanical degrees gradually replaced artificial rock drilling. Its appearance has greatly increased the drilling speed, correspondingly improved the overall construction progress, and improved the working environment, greatly reducing the labor intensity of workers.


Beginning in the 1980s, some large-scale tunnels in China began to introduce drilling rigs into the construction site, but they were affected by factors such as low quality of construction workers, insufficient construction management, and unreasonable mechanical support. Since the 1990s, The artificial hand-held air gun combined with the simple gantry drilling method has been widely used again.


In today's domestic tunnel field, some construction units responded to the requirements of the superiors for “construction full mechanization reform” and spent tens of millions of foreign rock drilling equipment. Among them, the three-arm drilling rig was the mainstream. Nowadays, China has also produced single-arm, double-arm and other rock drilling rigs.
